I just got home from a great vacation. I left my family behind last week with my husband joining me for the weekend.
So you are probably saying "She deserves what she gets when she gets home" and you would be right.
As I opened one cupboard to put things away this is what greeted me.

As I opened one cupboard to put things away this is what greeted me.
And this
Both drawers in this cupboard were a disorganized mess!
Dishes had been tossed in the drawers in such a fashion that I knew the people putting them away had no idea where they really were to go.
Now I have a real challenge. How am I going to organize these drawers in such a way that people will be able to tell where to put things.

It only took me a minute to get the bottom drawer in order but as I studied the contents of the drawer I realized that unless I (and I mean only me) am constantly re-arranging the drawer it becomes a big mess very quickly.
I have been moving these containers that are used to hold left overs and lunch treats from one cupboard to another trying to find a way to keep them in order, as well as, being able to access them easily. I really thought I had finally found the best place for them with this bottom drawer.
I have been toying with the idea of getting rid of the wide variety of sizes and shapes and stream lining them to just a few that stack well and are easier to keep neat.
While shopping at IKEA I found these containers

While shopping at IKEA I found these containers
They come in three different sizes, 17 oz,, 30 oz. and 41 oz. (which translates to be about 2 cups, 4 cups and 6 cups.) but since they are shaped the same they stack easily and neatly.
They are not too much more in cost than the glad ware and ziplock plastic containers that I have been buying. They so far seem to be more durable as well.
Look at how well they stack, and the lids are all the same size so I can put them all together in one container. Love it!

I am totally sold.
I also love the way they stack in the refrigerator.

Instead of just throwing away all the old containers I plan to use them for when I take food to other people or when I am sending food home with my daughters.
At IKEA I also found these containers that are safe for the microwave which makes them great for sending lunches in for my husband.

It really won't take long for all the old containers to be given away and I will be left with a drawer that is neat and organized.
To make it easier for the various people (my children, husband and mother-in-law) who put things away. I have decided that labeling the drawers is the only way to go. I do have a label maker on my Christmas wish list but until that comes true I will make due with painters tape and a sharpie.

Maybe it is a lot to hope for, but I do hope the next time I am away from home for a few days, these drawers will still look great. At least there is a chance that they will have the right dishes in them.
P.S. To continue organizing my recipes I decided to always add a recipe that someone has asked for. Well the Chocolate Cake recipe that I use has been asked for a few times since I decided that so I am going to add it now.
I got the recipe from the Food and Family magazine spring 2006 edition that Kraft put out.
