As I mentioned in my last post I learned all kinds of interesting things while on the cruise to the Antarctic.
Food carving being one of them.
I simply had to come home and try my hand at it, but the little bit of instruction given to us on the boat wasn't enough for my appetite.
I went on the internet and started searching youtube videos about fruit and vegetable carving. There are a ton of videos out there so I chose to watch a woman who does Thai carving. Her videos are simple and well done.
Here is a link if you want to see them. http://www.youtube.com/user/MutitaEdibleArt
(If you do choose to watch these videos do not compare the finished products. This is my first try after all.)
After starting at the very beginning and watching the first 24 videos I thought it was time to give it a try.

The apple would look way more impressive it if was a deep red but you do with what you have. The carrots I did on a smaller scale than those demonstrated on the videos. And the red pepper was easier than I expected. The pepper is my husband's favorite.
Next I thought I would try my had at radishes There are several ways to make flowers out of radishes but this is one of my favorites.
Moving on to a cucumber I was able to create this water lily.
You may ask how long these pieces of art will last in your fridge? I don't know the answer yet but I carved the radish and cucumber four days ago and they are still going strong. The trick is to leave them in an air tight container in the fridge.
Now no attempt would be complete without trying to carve a watermelon. So I purchased a mini watermelon to be the guinea pig (so to speak).

I don't care how many videos you watch you just have to dig in to get a feel for what they are talking about. Take this first attempt on watermelon carving. I was so afaid of cutting off too much of the white skin that I didn't cut off near enough. Even so I still think if looks pretty cool.
I am sure I will be sharing more fruit and vegetable art as well as ways to organize them in the future.
In the mean time grab a knife and have some fun. You could also share any edible art that you like to do as well.
